Overwatch 2's New Ping System is Demonstrated on the Reddit Gaming Community

Overwatch 2's New Ping System

In a sea of new heroes, hero reworks, and changes to team size, the ping mechanic stood out as a whole new, enhanced system that seemed to fly under everyone's eye at the time of release. Despite this, the reduction from six to five teammates necessitates increased crew cooperation and communication among members. The problem stems from the fact that not everyone has access to a headset or is comfortable speaking to complete strangers. Blizzard recognized that there was a problem and provided us with a completely new way of communicating with our teammates without actually using our own language.

Aside from healing requests, the ping system was rarely used in the original game, but Blizzard improved the system to make it more useful and reliable. This Reddit video, created by Person Refookul, does an excellent job of showcasing the new features of the app.

To begin, you can now ping specific adversaries and inform your crew of the presence of the hero and their general location by marking them on the HUD. So if a Mercy or a Hanzo is coming up behind you, you may now notify your crew without speaking a single word to their existence. With the exception of extremely specific characters such as Sombra, the ping cannot see through partitions, and the marker will remain at its last place if the character loses line of sight, necessitating a re-pinging of the ping.

It additionally enables extra tactical pings, where you'll be able to primarily build out a difficult strategy of attack with a couple of simple button presses. Rather than just hoping that their teammates will see them, a more experienced player can now leave marks on the ground to indicate a choke point or to inform them of where they intend to move next.

The result is that the outcome of a battle is determined more by communication and basic coordination, rather than whether one team has a Discord name and the other is made up largely of randos who were thrown together in a public lobby.
